Us Vs. Them

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Can I just tell you, I absolutely detest politics?? I dislike the run up to elections where the candidates from either side are happily smearing the reputations of their opponants, usually without doing anything to tell you what they are doing. Simply “look at all the reasons why the other guys sucks, I must be better, by default.” I’ve also found that people in general are incapable of having respectful, rational discussions when politics are involved. I found a conservative blog that seems to be a case in point, consistently whining about everything wrong with liberals. Apparently everyone who is not a hip conservative like him fits a stereotype, like his 10 ways to spot a liberal. I’ve never met anyone who fit either party’s stereotypes completely, and it’s this blind hatred for person’s of other belief systems that keeps me from enterring into debates with people on my beliefs. I would be willing to bet you probably won’t see many political posts from me at alll… maybe one or two as the elections draw closer, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. I’ll be keeping my opinions to myself, as others should consider. I’ll never understand this Us Vs. Them mentality that the general public has.

Self Portrait Sunday 5-20-07

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

This is my “I’m a bum who barely bothered to get out of bed today, much less take a shower” look. Haha! Okay, I did bother to get out of bed, but by the time I thought about taking a shower, it was late enough that I decided not to mess with it. I’ve spent so many weeks and weekends in a row just constantly being out or at other people’s places that I decided to just stay at home this weekend. Of course, I had a ton of laundry I should have been doing today, but I just wanted to stay home. The laundry can come later!!

To play along, post a picture of yourself every Sunday. Then visit DigiCass and let us know so that the rest of us can come see you!

Computer Monitoring

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder about computer monitoring. The type of monitoring I’m talking about would be more of the watching the activity on the network type of thing. That’s a note for anyone who uses the internet or email at their place of business– keep in mind, anything you do while there can, and probably will be monitored at some point.

It’s not something that I worry about too much because I’m not doing anything I’m not supposed to be. I don’t really have anything to do at work besides answering the phone and checking in guests, so it’s up to me to fill the rest of my time, and I generally read or check message boards online. Sometime I have to wonder though, especially when the message board I visit every day falls to a kind of… inappropriate level of conversation (which happens a lot lol). If they ever decide to check out my computer activity on the network, I imagine there’d be a fairly confused, or disturbed IT guy on the other end.

Ultimate Racing Weekend

Friday, May 18th, 2007

That’s what I’m registered to win! The B100 Ultimate Racing weekend. The only problem is that I’m sure it’s a “must be present to win” deal, and I have jury duty selection that morning. If I get selected, I could very well be in a jury room deliberating at the time of the drawing. But that’s something to worry about next week.
Whenever I hear their little “cue to call”, I generally pick up the phone and start trying to get through. I very rarely even get a ring, so there must just be something about today. A couple of hours ago, I got a ring and was caller number six. And this afternoon, I was about to stop trying to dial figuring they had to have their tenth caller, when there was ringing on the other end. “B100, who’s this?” Of course, I knew I’d finally gotten caller number ten because if you are callers one through nine, they don’t care who you are!! It’s very nervewracking to think about how to respond when you know every word is being recorded to be played back at the end of the song! When Stinger, I believe it was, got done with the recorded part of it, he said “Hey you’re good at that.” I’m sure they say that to everyone, but I’ll choose to believe that I was just exceptionally on the ball. Hearing myself played back on the radio wasn’t as painful as I thought it was going to be! I always think my voice sounds shrill when I hear it back on recordings, but this wasn’t. So B100, if you’re ever looking for a new DJ… ;)

If at first you don’t succeed…

There’s definitely something to be said for getting things done right the first time. The building where I work is currently undergoing a lot of renovations, both cosmetically and structurally. They are also making some changes related to the builidng that require them to obtain measurements for doors, sidewalks and other entryways. There is a gentleman that is currently measuring the sidewalk in front of the main door here that has been here to measure the same exact thing no less than six times previously. I’ve watched him move the same directions, count off the same paces, and turn around in the same confused circles at least six times before today. Granted, I can understand that changes in the plans can allow for the need to do further calculations, but seriously?? That sidewalk is still the same distance from the door as it was the first time, I promise.

Mother’s Day Sunday

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Nothing like showing up to write about Mother’s Day three days after the fact, eh? :) I spent the morning on Sunday cleaning my apartment. Well, a mixture of actually cleaning, and just plain hiding the mess. Anyways, I was getting it in shape for company because on a whim on Friday, I invited my mom, her husband and my brother over for lunch. It should be noted that when I decided to do that, there were at least 8 boxes on my living room floor, and the contents of several shelves strewn about. Not the best planning, but oh well! I got it all put away before my guests arrived.

My brother ended up not coming because he woke up feeling sick and thought that the smell/sight of food might make him ill again. It was too bad because he’d never been to my apartment before, but hey, we ended up with leftovers. :) I made White Chicken Parmesan, which my friend Colleen was kind of enough to get me the recipe for. I was really nervous about making it because I’d never cooked raw chicken before. Actually, I should admit that I’d never even cooked spaghetti noodles before!! Hey, that’s why I have a Learning To Cook category because I’m, well, learning!

I should say that the dinner turned out wonderful! It was very good, and everyone liked it. My mom even asked for the recipe because she said it was definitely something to be made again. Yay! Pat on the back for me! :) I was just glad it turned out! I still haven’t given my mom her mother’s day gift though. I had part of it on Sunday, but I wanted to get the rest of it before I gave it to her. I was going to get that handled today, but certain things are not behaving well. I’ll have to worry about that when I get home I guess… after all of the anticipation, I sure hope she likes it!!

Killian’s Photo Shoot

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

When I wrote about Friday’s excursions, I promised pictures of Killian as soon as Ash-lee got them uploaded. Well, I checked again and there they were!! Yay! Without further ado, here’s a couple of the pictures from his three months photo shoot on Friday.

You can see by his left arm over there that he waves his arms all around when he’s happy and excited.

This is one of my favorite pictures from Friday. He was pulling this blanket over his face and flirting with the lady taking the pictures. I think I might have to get a 5×7 of this one. The 5×7 I already have ordered is one of the naked butt shots. Hehe, so cute!! I’m very proud of him, and I think you can see that it is completely justified!

Getting off the hook

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I’m currently trying to get out of jury duty. I actually wouldn’t mind serving on a jury, I just would prefer not to have to miss a day of work to do so. My company will pay me for jury duty, but it takes awhile, and I can’t afford for that money not to be on the paycheck to begin with!! I was hoping to get an exemption for being on a two month term a little while back, but unfortunately the two year exemption doesn’t qualify if you don’t get chosen for a jury. Boo. The lady said that if it was going to be an extreme hardship for me to serve, she could probably get me qualified for an exemption, but I don’t think I fit the bill. Maybe I should tell her that appearing would interfere with my need to check into drug rehab? Nah, I’m sure they’d need proof of that. I guess I’ll just have to burn another vacation day so that I can get paid on time and go do my civic duty. I did find out that it is a one day trial so even if I get picked, it won’t take any additional days.

Thanks Tide

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

A joke I got in my email today that I wanted to pass along…

Dear Tide,

I am writing to say what an excellent product you have! I’ve used it all of my married life , as my Mom always told me it was the best. Now that I am in my fifties I find it even better! In fact , about a month ago , I spilled some red wine on my new white blouse. My inconsiderate and uncaring husband started to belittle me about how clumsy I was , and generally started becoming a pain in the neck. One thing led to another and somehow I ended up with his blood on my new white blouse! I grabbed my bottle of Tide with bleach alternative , to my surprise and satisfaction , all of the stains came out! In fact , the stains came out so well the detectives who came by yesterday told me that the DNA tests on my blouse were negative and then my attorney called and said that I was no longer considered a suspect in the disappearance of my husband.

What a relief! Going through menopause is bad enough without being a murder suspect! I thank you , once again , for having a great product.

Well , gotta go , have to write to the Hefty bag people.

Reassigning furniture

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

After I talked about getting new furniture yesterday, I was thinking about some of the furniture that is already in my apartment. Namely the things that aren’t being used for their design purpose. I have a small metal cabinet that houses my pots and pans and hold my microwave, a cheap two shelf bookcase on casters to hold my TV, and a papasan chair frame that is serving as a makeshift dresser drawer. Okay, that last one is because I’m always too lazy to put my clothes away. But I could definitely do with a new TV stand like the ones at Studio RTA Furniture. I could also do with a cabinet for my dishes that’s in better shape than the one I have– right now the door won’t stay shut!
