Not a Winner

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

I’ve decided that I’m just not a winner… There are people out there who are just plain lucky. They’ll constantly tell you about this thing that they won, and that thing that they won. I enter contests all the time, but I just never win. I did win some books during a Bloggy Giveaway a year ago, I think… and I won a raffle my senior year of high school (one of 10 people), but all the rest of the contests I take the time to enter? Nada. I think it’s pretty clear that I’m not going to be the one telling you about the free hotel stay that I won, or the spa trip, or the flight to somewhere fantastic. Oh well! If we have to work hard for the things we get, that means that we appreciate them more, right?

SPS 3/29/09

This is me, this morning, shortly after I showered and got dressed this morning. You know, back when I was still pretending like I was going to be productive and go to the grocery store. I really did intend to go to the grocery store this morning, but I took too long getting around to getting ready and making a list. By the time I was ready to think about going, it was snowing and blowing outside and I decided I had enough food in the apartment to make it through today!

It hasn’t been an entirely unproductive day though. I’ve done the dishes, cleaned part of the bathroom and done 5 loads of laundry. Oh, and tried to cut off one of my fingers. Don’t worry, I didn’t succeed. Plus, I think being showered and dressed before 11 am on a Sunday is productive in and of itself… Most Sundays I don’t even bother leaving my pajamas… except maybe to shower before bed and change into new pajamas.

Not the most exciting day ever, but I’ll probably spend the rest of it being lazy. I’m currently trying to find something decent to watch on TV. On a Sunday evening, that’s easier said than done!

Bite Sized Brownie Pan

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Oh. My. Goodness. I’m always finding kitchen gadgets that I want, and today is no exception. I found a pan that I really, really WANT. It’s a bite-sized brownie pan! You heard me… go check it out. I’ll wait. Here’s a link:

Wilton Bite-Size Brownie Squares 24 Cavity Silicone Mold Pan

How freaking awesome does that look? I WANT ONE! If anyone from Wilton is reading this, please, feel free to send me one of these pans! I’ll review it over on Jenn Cooks. Maybe I’ll even share some of my bite-sized brownies with someone else. Maybe. They’ve got a whole line of brownie products now that I’d like to try… including a mint chocolate crunchy topping. But I’d be happy with the pan!

Where Did You Learn to Drive?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

You know how there are always people who think they could fly an airplane because they’ve logged time with games that have flight simulators? Well, I’m starting to think that there are people out there driving cars who think they know how to drive because they play Mario Kart with their Wii accessories every night… sitting on your couch with a little plastic wheel does not make you an expert!

It’s no secret that I have many road-related pet peeves, but man! People are just driving me crazy lately with the psycho driving! The other day, I was driving down the road doing about 50 mph (which was the speed limit, by the way!) when a truck pulled out in front of me. Naturally, I ended up pretty close to his bumper and HE is the one making angry gestures at ME. DUDE. There may have been some yelling and not so nice words involved…

Then there are people like this morning. I’m waiting to make a left turn, and the person in front of me turns before they should have. In their defense, there was a line of traffic on the other side waiting to turn, and you couldn’t see around them. A truck whipped around from the back of that lane, to speed through the intersection. They narrowly avoided hitting each other. Now, it might sound like I’m annoyed with the car that had been in front of me, but I’m annoyed with the truck. They didn’t even flash their brakes… if anything they SPED UP when they saw the car turning in front of them. Seriously? Why? Yes, it would be their fault if you hit them, but if you DO hit someone at those speeds, someone is going to get seriously hurt. I just don’t get why people drive like that.

But it’s not just drivers! Yesterday I almost got to see a kid on a bicycle get hit by a city bus because he crossed a busy street, against a red light, in front of a freaking BUS! The bus swerved and braked not to hit the kid. P.S. People on bikes have to follow the rules of the road too! Yes, that means that red lights, stop signs and right of way apply to you!

Cleaning and Imaginary Gardens

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

If I wasn’t so vain, I’d do a Self Portrait Part Two. I’ve been cleaning since I made my last post, so I’m looking considerably less “put together” at the moment! How many years have I been washing dishes? And I still can’t manage to wash a sink full of dishes without completely soaking myself.

Of course, I say I’ve “been cleaning” since the last post, but in reality I’ve probably done as much playing on the internet as cleaning. You know, run the water in the sink… check for Twitter replies… empty the bathroom trash can… check email… clean litter boxes… play Word Hunt…

I’ve quit working for tonight so I can get something to eat and get to bed, which is just as well since I got distracted by someone’s tutorial for a raised bed garden. See, I’ve got this crazy idea in my head that if I had a yard, I’d put in a garden. Not that I’d have *any* clue whatsoever what to do with a garden if I had one. I think I’m just ready for the fresh fruits and vegetables of summer, and reading about everyone’s plans for their gardens and Blackberry plants and tomatoes has addled my brain! Surely, that must be it!

SPS 3/22/09

Sunday again, already?? Man, where does the time go? It’s been a pretty good week, and the weather is absolutely gorgeous today!! I actually got out for a little while. It was one of my best friends’ baby shower today, and we had a good time, like we always do. She was scheduled for a c-section on April 3rd, but her blood pressure has been high so she may be having the baby as early as Wednesday!

Anyways, I took this picture right after I got home. Wanted to get this post up as soon as possible because I don’t know if I’m going to need to go into work tonight. The Union at the place where I work is in contract negotiations, and they vote in about half an hour. If they accept the contract, it’s work as normal tomorrow morning. If they vote no, they’ll be on strike, and I have to go in and handle some administrative things as soon as I get the call. Then I’ll be headed in at 6am tomorrow. Technically, noone has told me that my schedule has changed, but the rest of the plant will go in at 6, and I have no intention of being the only one trying to cross a picket line at 6:45. I certainly don’t want to need safety equipment just to get into work. Of course, everyone who knows that striking is a possibility has horror stories to tell about some union that their sister-in-law’s cousin’s nephew’s friend’s brother heard about that went on strike and they broke people’s car windows and threw bricks and and and and!

We’re all hoping that management and the union reach an agreement, but right now it’s just wait and see! But at least I got my self portrait up, cause that’s the most important part, right?

Beware the Ides of March…

Which for me basically meant “Haha everything is going to stop working!” I managed to get a picture taken for Self Portrait Sunday, as you see, but only because I stood near the open window so I could shut off the flash. My camera has suddenly decided that it won’t take a picture. It focuses, the stupid orange light comes on, but unless the flash is off, it just will NOT take a picture. I’m hoping it’s just dying batteries and not the camera itself dying. But I made a new dish today, and couldn’t take pictures for a post on Jenn Cooks! It was sad! And of course my computer is now deciding to be less than cooperative.

I’m actually thinking about going to bed before too much longer… I was up until almost 1 am this morning but was still out of bed by 7. I’ve had a pretty good weekend. Shopping Friday night and Saturday morning, hung out with my mom and Killian Saturday night, and spent a few hours with my friend Erica today. I hardly ever see her these days, so that was nice. Not an overly restful weekend, but a good one anyways!

Just Say No to Partial Feeds

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I am about to need to buy term insurance for my sanity… (no comments from the peanut gallery on that one lol) Why, why, why…. WHY are so many people switching from a full RSS feed for their blog to a partial feed? I’m really getting frustrated because more and more of the blogs I subscribe to in Google Reader are suddenly showing up with just partial feeds. I know a lot of people do it to get more people to click over onto their blogs and inflate their stats, but that doesn’t work with me. It’s unlikely that what you’ve posted in the two and half sentences that show in my feed reader are enough for me to want to click over and read the whole thing. I’ll probably skim right past your post, and eventually I’ll take the time to go into my subscriptions and delete it entirely since I’m not reading it anyways. I don’t subscribe to partial feeds, so I find it really frustrating when a blog I was previously enjoying suddenly switches to one. I promise, if I like your post, I *will* click out of reader to come visit your site and read the comments and maybe leave one of my own. You don’t have to try and “trick” me into doing it.

Self Portait Sunday 3/8/09

SPS 3/8/09

This will probably be kind of short, both because my computer is not cooperating tonight, and because I need to go to bed. (Even though I’m not tired. Stupid Daylight Savings Time– darn you Mitch Daniels!) This picture is me just a few minutes ago. You can see my girlie nightgown, and my cheeks that are still red from blow drying my hair!

You should find this surprising, given my usual Sunday reports: I’ve had a pretty productive weekend! I really worked hard to clean my apartment up. There are still things that need done, like washing the dishes and vacuuming the floors, but other than that things are looking pretty good. I do need to carry out some recycling, but that wasn’t going to happen with the torential downpours we’ve had today! But I got all my bedding and my clothes washed, cleaned the entire bathroom including the litter boxes and mopping the floors, mopped the kitchen floor, and did general picking up around the living room. Phew! With all that sweating, I didn’t bother getting myself cleaned up until just a little while ago.

Well I guess I’ll think about getting in bed, even though it’s “really” only 8:30. Even my computer isn’t convinced– it keeps changing itself back an hour.

Gorgeous Weather

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Oh my goodness, it is absolutely gorgeous outside today! It’s 66 degrees and sunny. I considered taking my lunch outside this morning, but decided against it– I knew if I went outside to soak up some of the sunshine, I’d have had a hard time making myself come back inside! Luckily I have a lot of windows by my desk, so I can enjoy the sunshine pouring in, even if I can’t enjoy the higher temperatures. We’re supposed to get some rain this weekend, but I’m hoping it will hold off at least long enough for me to be able to get outside and enjoy some of this spring weather after work today. If nothing else, I’ll be able to enjoy opening the windows at home.

The spring-like weather notwithstanding, isn’t it a little bit early for prom stuff just yet?? When I was in high school, the prom was always the weekend of Mother’s Day, but I’m already hearing commercials for prom-related things: tuxedos, prom dresses, limos, etc. I guess there’s such a thing as planning ahead, but it still seems early to me. But then again, I feel like this year is speeding right by already so maybe it’s just me digging my heels in.
