Pet Food Recall

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Those of you with pets might want to pay attention to this. Ontario-based Menu Food is recalling pet food sold under 46 brands of dog food and 37 brands of cat food, including well known brands names such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. Pet owners are reporting renal failure in their animals, including 10 related pet deaths. You can find more details, including the complete brand name list, at the Menu Foods Recall Information site. I scanned the list myself, and was glad to see that the food Pudge and Lucy eat wasn’t on there. I didn’t think it would be as pet owners are reporting that their animals are getting sick and not wanting to eat, but my kitties still have very healthy appetites.

6 year old alone with dad’s body

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Have you heard about this? I just logged onto to CNN.com to read about this story. Apparently a six-year-old boy stayed for two days with his father’s dead body. That’s just tragic! The article said he was more distressed about being out of the house without permission than about his dad. I can’t help but wonder how he’s going to feel about it a few years down the road when he understands what really happened. It also reinforces the importance of making sure kids know how to call 911, as soon as they are old enough to understand!

Britney in rehab

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

The speculation has been unreal ever since news broke last week that Britney Spears had shaved her head, and then gone to get a tattoo. Many of her more rabid fans insisted that everyone was “hating” and that she was still beautiful. When I was looking at the pictures of her with her head freshly shaved, I didn’t see beautiful. I saw a girl who is very close to my age coming apart at the seams. Apparently, she’s decided to get the help she needs because according to CNN, she’s officially checked into a drug rehab center, although her representatives won’t disclose what drug she’s trying to ditch. I really hope she gets the help she needs… it’s no fun to watch someone self-destruct, celebrity or no, and she’s got two little boys who need her.

RIP Anna Nicole

Friday, February 9th, 2007

I’m sure this is old news for most of you reading this blog, but Anna Nicole Smith died yesterday at age 39. Now, I’m not a big fan of Anna Nicole, but this is just so sad. Her daughter is so young, and now she’ll never know her mother. On the other hand, hopefully now they’ll be able to complete the paternity test, and will be able to solve the paternity of young Dannielynn once and for all.
They’ll be performing the autopsy later today, so we’ll just have to wait to find out what happened.

Congratulations Colts!

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Woohoo! Congratulations to the Indianapolis Colts, winners of the 41st SuperBowl! I had a good day yesterday, though in my opinion, the game and the commercials were really nothing spectacular. I always look forward to the commercials every year, and they just fell short this time around. I was at Erica’s, and we had a ton of people crammed in the living room… it was pretty much an across the board thing because I don’t think we made it much further than the first quarter before we stopped paying much attention to the commercials.

I thought the blockbuster mouse commercial was funny though!
Rumor has it that this commercial is an old one, but I don’t remember it. I remember other commercials featuring the same characters.

Well either way, it’s all over now. I’m still trying to track down the best SuperBowl commercial ever, but I can’t find it. It was in the 1996 or 97 Superbowl, I don’t remember which.
I think I’m going to have to head out and see if I can find a Colts sweatshirt. I wanted one before the game, but it was nowhere to be found. One store had NOTHING, and another stocked only Bears memorabilia. Bet they have Colts stuff now!!

Premarital Sex

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

According to a recent CNN.com article, 95% of Americans have had premarital sex. The article is from December 20, so obviously I’m a little late jumping on this bandwagon, but am I the only one to find this a little surprising?
On the same/a similar topic, the current issue of Glamour has an article about fathers and daughters taking vows of purity. To me, the article reads like the author wrote it from a completely horrified stance. On one hand, I can agree with her– there were girls as young as four years old signing contracts. There’s no way that they can even begin to comprehend what they are agreeing to. But when it comes to the older girls who are fully aware of just what they are promising, I don’t see what the problem is. The author is extremely concerned about girls who make the pledge feeling like failures if they happen to have premarital sex a couple of years down the road.
I don’t know. I would hope that most girls would have an understanding that their lives are in different places than they were when they signed the contract. I made a similar pledge when I was 12? 13? but I’m not going to fall to pieces if I end up having sex before I’m married. Did you catch that if? Yup, I’m still a virgin. I’m throwing that out there because it might color the way you read my views on premarital sex. Plus I got the *mindboggle* “You’ve never had sex” again just the other day. It’s not a fact that I advertise, but it’s not something I hide either. Sometimes it feels like I’m the only virgin left, even though that’s clearly not true.
Am I still waiting for marriage? Not necessarily, but I do still take a more serious approach to sex than it seems like most people do. Sex within marriage is probably ideal, but I also think sex outside of marriage is anything but casual. I’ve never felt strongly enough about anyone I’ve dated in the past to take that step, which is a good thing, since most of them turned out to be jerks. Just seems to me that if I’ve waited this long, there’s no good reason to go and make it something to regret now.

Saddam Hussein Executed

Friday, December 29th, 2006

ABC News just broke into the program I’d been listening to to announce that Saddam Hussein has been executed. You can read the developing story at CNN.com.

Natural Gas Explosion

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

This is so sad. I don’t know if this story is hitting any of the news stations out of the area or not. There was a natural gas explosion in Cass County which created a crater 75 to 80 feet wide and 12 feet deep. It killed an apprentice lineman at the scene. He was only 27 years old. I can’t find a written story with the details, but I think I heard that he’d just gotten married in September, and his wife is pregnant. It’s so tragic, and right before Christmas too.

You can read the story from the local newspaper here: Utility apprentice, 27, killed digging to install electric line

Heirloom Whale Vomit?

Monday, December 18th, 2006

This has got to be the weirdest piece of news I’ve read in awhile. “Let it be whale vomit, not just sea junk.” You read that right. Whale vomit. Heirloom whale vomit, to be exact.
Someone sent her a fifty year old, four pound hunk of dried whale puke. It could be worth $18,000. How crazy is that?!
