I have Tivo!

January 25, 2008 on 10:07 pm | In Television | 2 Comments

I’m getting ready to head for bed, but before I collapse onto my memory foam mattress, I wanted to check in with you guys. (Never mind the fact that I have a pillow-top Doctor’s Choice mattress, and not a memory foam.)

Guess what arrived on my doorstep yesterday afternoon? That’s right… my Tivo!! I’m proud to be coming out of the dark ages, and having a DVR system rather than relying on my brain to remember to set the VCR, and set it correctly. Of course, I unpacked it first thing, tried to make sense of the mess of wires, and got through the general set-up. I had plans to go to church so I didn’t have too much time to play with it, but I picked a few shows at random to have it record. Because you can’t have a Tivo and not have it recording something as soon as humanly possible!!

In fact, Sarah and I ended up watching one of those shows tonight while we waited for it to be time for How to Look Good Naked. So far, I like the Tivo, but I still need to figure out how to wire it up so I can run both the Tivo and my DVD player without having to move wires at all. I also will be spending a little bit with the manual to see what all I can do… gotta max out the potential here! Whatever happens though, I’ve already scheduled a season pass for the most important show — LOST season premiere next week!

The Moment of Truth

January 24, 2008 on 2:52 pm | In Television | 2 Comments

I didn’t post at all yesterday. I’ve been in a…. reflective mood the last couple days, and I’m still trying to formulate my thoughts on it, IF I want to post about it at all. But one thing I DID do yesterday was watch The Moment of Truth, after American Idol. It’s the show where people are hooked to a lie detector, and asked personal, potentially hurtful questions in the hopes of winning $500,000. I couldn’t look away. (Okay, I looked away long enough to set the VCR and go to bed, but I watched the rest first thing this morning.) It’s not the good kind of look away either, not really… more of a can’t look away from the horrendous train wreck sort of thing.

Take Catia. She was the wife of the first contestant. He walked away with no money, and she found out that he’s never used the internet to flirt with other women since they’ve been married. Great, right? Not so much… see, poor Catia ALSO found out that her husband has touched the women he works with longer than necessary, that he’d encourage her to have liposuction if she got a little bit pudgy, he hasn’t had children with her yet because he’s not sure they’ll be together for life, oh yeah, and that there is something that he’s done that would cause her not to trust him if she knew about it. Are these things that might be true for millions of men and husbands? Sure… but now the seed of doubt has been planted. She might have thought there were things that she didn’t know before, but now she KNOWS that there are things that she shouldn’t trust him about.

I don’t know. It’s an interesting idea. When I first heard about it, I thought it sounded like a fun show to watch. The more I thought about it though, and now that I’ve seen it, I’m not so sure. I’m all for honesty, I’m just not so sure this is such a great venue for it. Reveal these intimate secrets about yourself and maybe you’ll walk away with a little cash. Or maybe you’ll have succeeded in nothing more than putting cracks into the foundation of the the most important relationships in your life.

Nail Peeling?

Oh my god!! I’m currently watching American Idol, and I’m so disgusted that I just can’t help but write about this immediately. The guy on my TV has a baggie in his pocket full of pieces of his fingernails that he has PEELED OFF AND SAVED! It makes me think of the movie Fever Pitch where they’re talking about the guy who had bags full of his hair and toenail clippings. I always thought they made that up… oh goodness, was I wrong!
I’m only disappointed that I don’t have the VCR recording right now… This would be fantastic diet control! Next time I was tempted to get a piece of chocolate or something, all I’d have to do is play that little clip back and I wouldn’t want to eat chocolate anymore! They let him through to Hollywood, and I only pray that I don’t have to see his fingernail shavings on my television again. *gag*

Get Off My TV

January 15, 2008 on 9:10 pm | In Television | 2 Comments

I’m getting a little annoyed tonight. They keep cutting into regular programming tonight to update us on the Michigan primary. There have been double the interruptions between the national updates, and then the local ones because apparently being 10 minutes across the state line makes me more invested. I know I’m supposed to be informed, and invested in the election and the future of our country, but come on… it’s the Michigan primary. Why do you have to keep updating with your projected winners? OF COURSE you are projecting Hillary Clinton as the democratic winner– there isn’t anyone else on the freaking ballot!
Okay, I’m done venting. I DO care about the future of our country, and that includes this election and all the things leading up to it. But I still don’t see why they can’t wait until the news just a little bit later tonight to let me know who they think is going to win the primary.

Changing the Schedule

December 12, 2007 on 8:59 am | In Television | 3 Comments

I’m just wondering how many times NBC is going to change the time of their programming? The Biggest Loser’s only been in like 3 different time slots so far this season. First there were the two hours premieres starting at 8. Then there were the 1.5 hour shows which started at 8:30 after the Singing Bee. Then they were back to the 8pm two hour format. Last night, 8 o’clock rolls around, I switch my TV over to NBC to discover…. Deal or No Deal. Okay, seriously? There are only two or three weeks left of the Biggest Loser, and NOW we’re going to change the time again. I’m not a big fan of Deal or No Deal anymore, so I watched a little bit while doing other things, and set the VCR to record the Biggest Loser before going to bed.
I haven’t watched it yet, having other things to do when I get up at 5:30 in the morning… like showering, eating breakfast and packing a lunch to take to work. So please, don’t tell me what happened or who went home last night. I just wanted to express my annoyance at the scheduling changes. I just want them to get all their HDMI switches in order, or whatever they need to do and put my show on at the same time every week. I shouldn’t be surprised when I tune into NBC at 8pm on Tuesday nights.

Just Call Me Rudolph

I’d love to tell you that I feel much better than I did last night, but that’s simply not the case. I feel worse… I’ve gone through an entire box of Kleenexes by myself! My poor little nose is just raw– hence the title! I called my mom tonight and she said she could really hear it in my voice. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Hopefully I’m wrong. For now, I’ve taken a night time cold medicine. If it won’t make me feel better, at least it will knock me out! Can’t miss Kitchen Nightmares though, so I’ll set the VCR before I go.

The Biggest Loser

November 27, 2007 on 8:59 pm | In Health and Wellness, Television | 3 Comments

I’m in another one of my “I just don’t want to blog right now” phases. I was sitting over on the couch, watching the Biggest Loser and crocheting when I realized that I hadn’t blogged yet today. It was so tempting to just let it go, but I’m sooo close to the end of NaBloPoMo that I don’t want to give it up just yet.
Are any of you still watching the Biggest Loser? It’s one of the only shows that I make sure I catch every week. I’m not sure who I’m rooting for though. Other than Bob, but he obviously doesn’t count. ;) I would like to see Bea go home, not because I don’t like him, but because I cannot stand the red team trainer and he’s the only one left keeping her there.
Watching the Biggest Loser every week is always motivating. It makes me stop and go… hey, I can do that. I SHOULD do that! But if you check Jenn Loses Weight you can see that I’m just not doing it. I need to though. I HAVE to. It’s coming.

Kitchen Nightmares

November 15, 2007 on 7:53 pm | In Television | 4 Comments

Do any of you watch Kitchen Nightmares? It’s on Fox, Wednesday nights at 9. The basic premise is that Gordon Ramsay (of Hell’s Kitchen) visits restaurants that are failing and attempts to find out what is going wrong. It’s completely addicting because he finds things like severe bug infestations, rotten food, and cooks picking things off the floor and putting them back in the pan. And all the while, the head chef at the restaurant is all affronted that Gordon is giving them suggestions, and how dare he suggest that they might not know what they are doing?
It’s completely predictable– the food sucks, lots of fights ensue, Gordon fixes it and everyone goes home happily ever after. Even so, I’m completely hooked! I go to bed late every Wednesday night because I simply must stay up and watch the end. The only thing that drives me crazy is that at the end of the show, they give you a preview of next week’s restaurant. And every.single.time the announcer says, “This might be Gordon’s greatest challenge yet!” No kidding? You said that last week, and the week before that, and the week before that… How about we say “Hey, they’re all difficult!” and find something more specific to say?

Big Love

October 24, 2007 on 11:32 am | In Television | 1 Comment

I’m in love with Big Love. There are several people I know that are completely hooked on the show, but I’d never seen it before as I don’t want to pay extra for HBO. For some reason, it never occurred to me to check the series out on Netflix. Probably because I had the same movies from Netflix for two months at home. Oops.
Anyways, Colleen recently got the DVDs, and blogged about them. Since I do everything Colleen tells me to, obviously I ran right out and added them to my list. Well, for whatever reason I did it, I’m glad I did. I’m hooked! I love, love, love this show! I’ll be getting the last disc of season one in my mailbox this afternoon, and then I’ll be depressed that I don’t have any more to watch.

Gossip Girl

September 13, 2007 on 8:02 am | In Television | No Comments

With the fall series and season premieres coming up in the next week or two, I’m trying to keep my eye on the TV listings to see what’s coming up. I have a bad habit of wanting to watch something, but then missing the first show. Or first several. Since I don’t like to be behind, I end up not watching at all. And I’m not fancy enough to have a DVR, so at most I can watch one show in a time slot, and tape one. But I have an early bedtime, so I have to choose between the shows in later time slots. It kind of stinks, actually!
Among the shows I’d like to make sure I catch this year are The Biggest Loser, Lost, America’s Next Top Model, and Gossip Girl. Actually, I’m liking a lot of the CW’s new line-up– the mid-season starters are looking especially like things I could get sucked into. Gossip girl starts on September 19th. That’s next Wednesday night, so those of you with DVRs can set them now. It’s also convenient for me since I want to watch America’s Next Top Model, and that will be showing on Wednesday nights as well so I won’t even have to switch channels!
Gossip Girl on The CW looks pretty interesting. It’s based on the Gossip Girl books for young adults, and it features a group of teens from Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and a mysterious “Gossip Girl” who knows everything and posts it on her blog. As someone who writes a few blogs, and reads a lot more than that, I’m intrigued. Mix in that I have a bad habit for wanting to know all the gossip, and I’m definitely interested. One of my coworkers comes in here every afternoon and says, “Hey Jenn, what you know good?” Funny enough, I can usually come up with something. ;)
I’m making myself a note to catch Gossip Girl on the CW next week… if I don’t space it out, I’ll make sure I come back here and report on it!
